Calculate your household's carbon footprint
How many tonnes of CO2 emissions are you responsible for every year?
Step 1 - Calculate your emissions from flying
How many return flights do you make in a year? Count each person flying as one flight - so if a family of four goes to Rome and back, that's four medium haul return flights.
If you know the distance you travelled you can enter it in miles (untick 'Don't know' first), otherwise leave 'Don't know' ticked.
Step 2 - Calculate your emissions from driving
Enter your annual mileage against the correct size of car and choice of fuel (petrol or diesel).
You can estimate your annual mileage by looking at your last two MOT reports if you have them, or by multiplying your weekly mileage by 52. You can enter values against more than one type of car. Multiply by 0.625 (1 km = 0.625 miles).
Step 4 - Calculate emissions from your home
You will need your energy bills to hand to do this.
If you don't have your energy bills to hand, follow this link to the government calculator.
If you do have your bills to hand simply enter your annual consumption of electricity, gas etc in the boxes below. Be sure to check the units on the bill agree with the units in our calculator. If you don't use a fuel leave the box blank.
If your fuel bills are given quarterly you can switch to the quarterly view. Select between yearly and quarterly views here:

Summary - Your household's carbon footprint
In the UK the average emission per head of CO2 or equivalent is 14 tonnes per annum. In the developing world the average emission per head is 4 tonnes per annum.
If they all lived like we do, that would add another 40 billion tonnes or so a year - enough to double global emissions.
Please note:
The calculations made by our carbon footprint calculator are based on the emissions factors given by Defra. The aim is to give you a rough ('order of magnitude') idea of your household emissions based on limited provision of information by you.
