Cool the World is a collection of lesson plans and educational resources to teach children about global warming and renewable technologies.

These resources were originally put together to support Schools Low Carbon Day which took place on 24th June 2010. Over 1600 schools, both primary and secondary, took part in Schools Low Carbon Day.

The day was run on an entirely voluntary basis. The lady who organised it, Erica Robb, is so passionate about renewable energy, she now runs a renewable technology company, Spirit Solar www.spiritsolar.co.uk. Spirit Solar installs solar panels (for electricity and hot water) and heat pumps in domestic and commercial buildings, and in schools.

Spirit Solar has taken over the running of the Cool the World site, updating to and augmenting the resources. The resources are available free of charge to whoever wishes to use them.

Here is our favourite comment from one of the participants in Schools Low Carbon Day (Swanage Middle School):

Thank you for the posters and E-resources which enabled us to take part in Low Carbon Day. This year we were off timetable for the whole morning with our KS3 pupils. They learned alot about the effects of global warming on peoples lives, wildlife, and what causes the greenhouse effect. They also calculated their own and the school's carbon footprint. Finally, some pupils prepared and deliverd an assembly to our KS2 pupils, while others wrote a report to parents advising them how to reduce the household carbon footprint, and wrote a pledge for what they were going to do. The day has had a big impact on life around school with lots of pupils reminding each other to turn lights off when not needed etc. Hopefully we will be able to keep the momentum going, and follow up next year to see if we've reduced our carbon footprint.
